Budget-Friendly Tips for Summer Adventures

August 6, 2025 by Spectrum Credit Union

Summer’s calling — and so is the open road. Whether you're planning a weekend escape or a cross-country adventure, we’re here to help you travel smart, save more, and make the most of every mile. From budgeting wisely to prepping your vehicle, these tips will help you cruise into summer with confidence.

Start with a budget that reflects your trip style

Before you pack a bag or top off your tank, take time to map out your road trip budget. Think beyond just gas and hotels — consider what kind of experience you want. Are you more likely to hit the drive-thru or cook meals at a campground? Will you stay in motels or splurge on a cabin rental? Include costs like park entry fees, tolls, pet boarding, or souvenir shopping.

One helpful approach is to split your budget into daily estimates for fuel, food, lodging, and activities. Then add a 10–15% buffer for unexpected expenses — flat tires, detours, or that must-see roadside attraction you didn’t plan for. A little flexibility in your budget gives you peace of mind when plans inevitably shift.

Look for ways to save without cutting corners

There are plenty of ways to stretch your road trip  dollars without sacrificing comfort or fun. Start by signing up for loyalty or rewards programs at gas stations — many chains offer discounts per gallon or points toward future savings. When booking accommodations, look for places that offer free breakfast or kitchenettes so you can save on meals.

Planning a flexible itinerary can also help you avoid peak-season prices. Weekday stays are often cheaper than weekends, and sometimes staying just outside a popular destination can save a bundle. If you're traveling with family or friends, consider sharing lodging or rotating who pays for fuel — it all adds up.

Get your vehicle road-trip ready

Your car is your co-pilot on a road trip, and giving it a little TLC before departure can save you from expensive surprises. In addition to the basics — oil change, tire check, and topping off fluids — take time to inspect your battery, brakes, and lights. Don’t forget your wiper blades, especially if you’ll be driving through a variety of weather conditions.

Hot weather can also take a toll on older car batteries, so it’s worth having yours tested. Even simple steps like properly inflating your tires can improve fuel efficiency and reduce wear during long drives. And finally, make sure your registration, insurance, and roadside assistance info are up to date — all things you don’t want to be hunting for on the side of a highway.

Pack smart

Packing light is important — but packing smart is what really saves you money, time, and frustration on the road. Forgetting even a few small essentials can lead to unnecessary purchases at gas stations or tourist shops, where prices are often inflated.

Start by thinking through your day-to-day needs, from sun-up to sleep. People often forget items like phone chargers, sunglasses, or sunscreen — all of which are easy to overlook but costly to replace on the go. Refillable water bottles are another must-have; buying bottled water at every stop adds up quickly and creates unnecessary waste.

Other commonly forgotten items that can become surprise expenses include:

  • Medications or allergy remedies

  • Bug spray or anti-itch cream

  • Batteries or power banks for devices

  • Reusable shopping bags (especially handy in states with bag fees)

  • Travel-sized toiletries or hygiene products

Make your downtime count

While driving takes center stage on a road trip, downtime plays a bigger role than you think — and planning for it can help you save and recharge. Whether it’s a picnic lunch at a rest stop or an early evening at your motel, building in low-cost relaxation moments helps you avoid overspending out of boredom or fatigue.

Bring along low-effort activities like card games, a book, a hammock, or even a frisbee for roadside breaks. If you’re traveling with kids, activity books, coloring sets, or scavenger hunts can keep them entertained (and reduce screen fatigue). Giving yourself time to unwind can make the journey feel like part of the vacation, not just the route to it.
